Tips to Keep Your Blood Pressure in Check During National Blood Pressure Month

Natural Ways to Control Blood Pressure

May is National Blood Pressure Month, and many communities and individuals are taking the time to understand their blood pressure. Having high blood pressure is a dangerous condition that can damage your heart. It affects one in three people in the US and 1 billion people worldwide. But - there is good news. There are a number of things you can do to lower your blood pressure without medication. Here are a few tips to control your blood pressure naturally.

Walk and exercise regularly

We all know that exercise is one of the best things you can do. Regularly exercise is a great way to lower your high blood pressure, making your heart stronger and more efficient at pumping blood, which lowers the pressure in your arteries.

Reduce your sodium intake

Salt intake is high around the world, largely due to processed and prepared foods. Salt has been linked to high blood pressure and heart events, such as strokes. If you already have high blood pressure, it's worth cutting back your sodium intake. Swap processed foods for fresh fruit and vegetables, and season food with herbs and spices instead of salt.

Limit alcohol

Alcohol should be consumed in moderation. Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications.

Reduce your stress

Stress can contribute to high blood pressure. To help your health, it's important to manage your stress levels. Avoid stress triggers, make time to relax and do the activities you enjoy, practice meditation, and focus on issues that are in your control.
