It's National Mental Health Awareness Month!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

There are many reasons to celebrate in the month of May - May Day, Cinco de Mayo, graduations, and Mother's Day. All of these are significant events, people talk about them, make plans, throw parties and celebrate. But there is one other important event in the month of May.  Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May by reaching millions of people in the United States through the media, local events, and screenings.

Check out these tips to support yourself and those around you by maintaining good mental health.

  • Listen

With the constant stimulation of devices and the general pace of American life, we often forget the basics of simply listening to our friends and family. Work to be present however you need. This may mean turning your phone off for the day and unplugging from social media. This may mean going on a nature walk with a friend instead of sitting in a busy restaurant. When people know they are truly being listened to, they will feel more comfortable and open up to you.

  • Know the Signs

While warning signs could just be someone having an off day, it never hurts to ask them if they are doing okay. Generally, here are some warning signs to look out for:

  • Withdrawal
  • Problems with concentration or memory
  • Apathy
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Unusual behavior
  • Nervousness
  • Sleep or appetite changes
  • Mood changes
  • Create Your Own De-Stress Toolbox

Taking the time to unwind in a healthy way can help to keep your stress levels manageable, as well as increase productivity and general quality of life. Whether it's going to a yoga class, taking a walk on your lunch break, or deep breathing, find out what relaxes you and use this tool when you feel stress rising.
