It's National Heart Month - Load Up on These Heart-Healthy Foods

Take Care of Your Ticker with These Foods

Did you know that February is National Heart Month? Sure, this month may be known for Valentine's Day and perfect red hearts on cards to send to your loved one, but this February, remember to take care of your heart. To get you started, take a look at these heart-healthy foods that you will actually want to eat!

Whole Grains

It's no secret that whole grains are a healthier choice than processed and refined grains. Whole grains are rich in antioxidants, phytoestrogens, and phytosterols - all of which protect against heart disease. They are also especially high in soluble fiber, which helps to lower cholesterol.

Nuts

Nuts are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. A handful of healthy nuts (i.e. unsalted) such as almonds or walnuts will satisfy your hunger and help your heart.

Dark Beans

Kidney beans, black beans, and a variety of other beans are great for your heart because they are high in fiber, B-vitamins, minerals, and more. Whip up a chili with beans this National Heart Month!

Green Tea

People from across the world have touted the health benefits of tea, specifically green tea, for centuries. Green tea is especially good for the heart, and can even reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Remember to keep sweetened tea away from your cup though, as these are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dark Chocolate

Cocoa is rich in flavonoids, plant nutrients that help repair cell damage. Flavanols”cocoa's main kind of flavonoid”help lower blood pressure, promote proper blood clotting and boost blood flow to the brain and heart. Keep in mind one or two squares is all it takes to do the trick!

Avoid these foods that are linked to heart disease:

  • Soda
  • Diet soda
  • Ice cream
  • Margarine
  • Red meat
  • Processed meat (particularly bacon, sausages, hot dogs)
  • Cheese
  • Cheeseburgers
  • Fried chicken
  • Butter
  • Sour cream
