Earth Day, April 22nd, is a time to help Mother Nature. After all, she's been good to us, but the human population has not been so kind to her. We continually pollute oceans and the air, eliminate wild species, cut down forests, and abuse fossil fuel resources. In addition to cutting down on paper and turning lights off (which are both great!), these eco-friendly habits really help the planet.
Clean out your closet. Only 14 percent of all clothing is recycled. Use Earth Day to go through your closets and drawers, pull out everything you don't like or don't wear, and donate it. You can take it to your local thrift store, drop it off at your local charity shop, or check with a homeless shelter to see what they can use.
Unplug. Electronics that are plugged in at the wall but aren't being used still use energy. This unused energy can account for as much as 10 percent of your electricity bill. Eliminate these energy vampires by unplugging your appliances when not in use.
Grow your own fruit and veg. You can reduce your contribution to greenhouse gases, pollution, and pesticides by growing your own food at home. If you're not good in the garden, start small by planting a herb before graduating on to vegetables.
Ditch the plastic. It's estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Plastic is one of the worst environmental offenders. Be sure to reduce your plastic consumption by using reusable bags when visiting the grocery store, use glass or steel lunch containers, and pick loose fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans from bulk bins.
Prep your home for the seasons. Making sure you have adequate insulation and weather stripping not only guarantees lower energy costs and usage in the winter, but the summer, too.
Fix leaking toilets and faucets. Leaks and drips may not seem like a big deal, but they waste a lot of water. If you notice a leak, you'll need to call a plumber to assess the situation. Not only will this help you to save water, but it'll save money on your water bill, too!
