Mark Your Calendar For This Celebration
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is the holiday on which we all have the opportunity to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. So you can have something meaningful to do on this upcoming day, mark your calendar for Fallen Heroes, Rising Stars: A Juneteenth Celebration Through Dance. This local event will be held on Saturday, June 20th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 21st at 2:00 p.m. at the California Theater (351 Railroad Avenue) in Pittsburg.
During this important celebration, the Grown Women Dance Collective will showcase their talent. This Collective is made up of retired dancers, many of whom were trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. These all-stars of dance have joined together to combine performing arts and education in this celebration each year.
At this Juneteenth event, these talented dancers will pay homage to Etta James, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Maya Angelou, and Nina Simone through their art.
Quest for Identity will be on display during the event. Robert Scott curated this collection of vintage photographs documenting the journey of African Americans after they were liberated from slavery. There will also be a special master-level dance class offered by Aspire Pilates Center aimed at low-income children, seniors, and community members who find themselves suffering from back pain.
