How to Avoid Distracted Driving

Learn how to avoid distracted driving to stay safe on the roads.

Almost everyone is guilty of some form of distracted driving. Whether you fiddle with the radio, read directions from a navigation app, or get into thoughtful conversations with the passengers, it's easy to be distracted from driving. Even though you know your daily commute like the back of your hand, it's always essential to stay focused on the roads. After all, getting distracted is a major cause of accidents. If you need help to avoid distracted driving, read on.

Use your phone for emergencies only. While you're driving, only use your phone if you absolutely have to. Even then, it's best to pull over safely to the right shoulder and make a call. Although you have a hands-free device, you still could miss important visual and audio cues needed to avoid a crash.

If you're tired, pull to the side of the road. Tiredness kills, as we're so frequently warned. If you feel tired, pull off the road and have a quick cat nap instead of rushing home.

Limit the number of passengers. Especially important for teenagers and new drivers is to have a calm driving atmosphere. Getting into heated discussions and cramming too many people inside the car is a recipe for distractions - and disasters!

Avoid eating or drinking. Instead of rushing out of the house with your coffee and muffin, choose to set off 10 minutes later so that you can eat and drink in the house. Eating, drinking, and food spills are a major cause of distraction.

Prep before you get started. Before you get in the car, do a little prep work. Set your phone on silent, text who you need to text, eat your breakfast, and do your lipstick. Even though driving and multitasking seem like a good idea at the time, it's not worth getting into an accident.

Remember that the entire object of driving is to keep yourself and passengers safe on the road. For the auto insurance to protect you while you're cruising, visit Jack Stone Insurance Agency, serving Brentwood, Antioch, and surrounding metropolitan areas of California.
