Heart-Healthy Tips for American Heart Month

Improve Heart Health Naturally

February, American Heart Month, is all about taking care of our hearts. While we may be distracted with candy and chocolate hearts on Valentine's Day, many individuals take this month to resolve to be better informed about how to keep a healthy heart. One out of every four deaths in America is caused by heart disease - Diseases which are largely preventable with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Check out these heart-healthy tips to keep your ticker in good condition.

Don't skimp on sleep. We've all done it - skipped a few hours of shut-eye. However, if you make this a regular habit, you could be putting your heart health at risk. Aim to get six to eight hours of sleep every night to help your heart.

Keep it moving. A healthy heart needs activity! Adults who engage in 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity five times a week reduce their risk of a cardiac event. Research suggests that regular exercise benefits us in a number of ways, including a reduction in body weight, blood pressure, and ˜bad' cholesterol.

Fuel up wisely. It's no secret that what we eat plays a significant role in our overall health. Dump the fast and processed food and reach for fresh fruit and vegetables instead. Aim to cut down on your consumption of meat, salt, and sugar to better improve your heart. If cholesterol is an issue, be sure to limit your intake of animal products - they are the only food to contain dietary cholesterol.

Quit smoking. Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack than people who have never smoked. Smoking damages your entire body, and artery linings can be severely damaged by smoking. If you do smoke, take active steps to quit.
